Welcome to the Addiction and Art Website
This web site continues the Addiction and Art project started by the former Innovators Combating Substance Abuse, a National Program Office of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Also, inspiration for the site comes from the book, Addiction and Art by Patricia B. Santora, Margaret L. Dowell and Jack E. Henningfield (2010, The Johns Hopkins University Press).
Addiction Art Concept. Recent scientific findings have proven addiction to be a disease of the brain, affecting both brain and behavior. Addiction Art has the potential to take this message to the masses, most of whom still consider addiction to be a "weakness" or "moral failing" worthy of punishment. It can convey the human experience of addiction in a way that can help the general public understand addiction as a preventable and treatable chronic disease. Artworks about addiction and recovery can stimulate dialogue, can teach, and at this crucial point in history, can support contemporary scientific research for our world's well-being.
Addiction Art Downloads. This site provides free images for download relating to addiction and recovery. These works are available for use by schools, drug treatment centers, community organizations, addiction science professionals, medical professionals and the general public. These images are generously donated by artists to be shared for the good of mankind.
Addiction Art Exhibitions. Over the past several years Addiction and Art Exhibitions have been held at both professional substance abuse conferences and in local communities. All of these exhibitions have been enormously well received and extremely successful. This site exists to promote the continuation of the Addiction and Art project through the sharing of past exhibitions, providing guidelines for future ones, and offering opportunities for communication and networking.

Addiction Related Work reviewed in December, 2011

An addiction related artwork was recently reviewed in American Contemporary Art Magazine as part of an article by F. Lennox Campello about the Washington DC art scene. "The Sidi Flowchart" by Dr Margaret Dowell (our www.AddictionAndArt.Org editor) was part of an Addiction and Art show at the Frederick, MD Artomatic this fall. Tallahassee Community College joined forces with the Museum of Fine Arts in Tallahassee during August of 2011 to present an Addiction and Art show. The TCC show was directed towards school age children.
The art exhibition theme is "Drug Addiction and Recovery". The content of the artwork was a narrative of, reflection upon, or expression about some aspect of this theme. Jurors were particularly interested in seeing the human side of addiction and recovery. Artworks were judged based upon how effectively, clearly, and expressively the theme is explored.

give lecture on
ART & ADDICTION
at the Maryland Institute College of Art
A lecture by Dr. Jack Henningfield and Dr Patricia Santora on "ART & ADDICTION: Exploring the Power of Art in Recovery" will be presented on Thursday, November 10 at 7:00 P.M. Admission is free and anyone may attend.
Jack Henningfield, Ph.D. and Patricia Santora, Ph.D., leaders in the field of addiction science, will present a lecture on their innovative research that promotes the use of art to compliment addiction science in understanding and treating substance use disorders. In 2010, they joined Dr Margaret Dowell, Ph.D. in co-editing the book "Addiction and Art" published by The Johns Hopkins University Press.
The lecture is Sponsored by Maryland Institute College of Art's Community Arts Partnership and The Tuerk House: mainstay of Baltimore's substance abuse treatment community.

British Medical Association Honors Addiction and Art Book
with "Highly Commended" Award in the Psychiatry Category

The Addiction and Art book (Patricia B. Santora PhD, Margaret L. Dowell PhD, Jack E. Henningfied PhD, The Johns Hopkins University Press) received an award of "Highly Commended" (Psychiatry Category) in the 2011 British Medical Association's Book Awards Ceremony held September 14 in London.
The British Medical Association represents more than two thirds of practicing physicians in the United Kingdom. The association's annual book competition encourages and rewards excellence in medical publishing from around the world.

On September 7, the Juror Lounge at the Kane County Judicial Center (37W777 Route 38, St. Charles, Illinois) was converted into an art gallery and defendants used it to share personal stories through art works and the written word with the community.

through the Performing Arts
The Addiction Performance Project
at the National Institutes of Health
August 5, 2011
On Friday August 5th the National Institute on Drug Abuse will be hosting actress Debra Winger at the NIH Clinical Center for a performance of The Addiction Performance Project. This unique program is a new NIDA Continuing Medical Education & Continuing Edeucation project designed to address the stigma associated with addiction and to promote a healthy dialogue about integrating brief screening, intervention and referral into healthcare practices. Gil Kerlikowske, the Director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, will be introducing Ms. Winger and the panelists. The performance will be at the Lipsett Auditorium in the NIH Clinical Center from 10-11 a.m.

Their 3rd Annual Addiction and Art Show held in June at the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts (DCCA) was a huge success and a 4th show is already in the works for next year! In America one of every five deaths is related either directly or indirectly to substance abuse (tobacco, alcohol, legal and illegal drugs). Substance abuse is currently our biggest disease - responsible for cancers, strokes, accidents, murders and violence.
AddictionAndArt.org is responding to this urgent public health problem by recruiting artists to share online imagery related to the complexities of Addiction and Recovery. Selected imagery will appear on the site and will be made available to a worldwide audience as downloads for educational/health communication purposes.

New Curriculum Guidelines for download
In addition to the guidelines we provide for organizing Addiction and Art shows, addictionandart.org is pleased to announce that a new guideline that provides a unique Curriculum Guide K - 12 for Art Educators and Guidance Counselors is available for download. The title is Art and Addiction: Putting a Human Face on Addiction and Recovery. It is published by the Museum Education Program, Florida State University Museum of Fine Arts.
This curriculum guide approaches the subject matter of addiction and art in a way that is adaptable and appropriate for all age groups, from grades K-5 to grades 6 -12. It includes informational articles, lesson plan suggestions, a glossary and sample artworks. The guide is a product of Florida State University and all materials are in accordance with the current Florida Sunshine State Standards. The guide was created to coincide with an Art and Addiction Exhibition at Tallahassee Community College in 2011; however, it's contents may be utilized by schools anywhere, at any time.

Art Uniting People -
A Celebration of Creativity & Mental Health
This year the Mental Health Anti-Stigma HOPE Campaign will celebrate National Mental Health Month through "Art Uniting People - A Celebration of Creativity and Mental Health." This is an art exhibition dedicated to making a difference. It provides people whose lives have been affected by mental illness the opportunity to use art as a form of expression in order to engage the Alexandria community in a conversation about mental health issues.
The show will consist of a diverse range of art pieces including all the different mediums in painting as well as sculpture, drawings, ceramics, photography and writing. Artists will share the inspiration behind their art pieces and some of their personal stories to create a powerful and unique viewing experience for visitors to the exhibition.
Art works will be displayed at the Lee Center, 1108 Jefferson Street, from May 1st - June 30th, 2011. A second exhibition will be held at the Charles E. Beatley, Jr. Central Library, 5005 Duke St from July 1st, 2011 - Thursday, January 6th, 2012.

the ReSPECT project
Community and Treatment
Peter Bruun, one of the Addiction and Art Book's Advisory Board Members is the coordinator of the ReSPECT project, Community and Treatment, sponsored by Art on Purpose. The project uses photographs and audio to shed light on the relationship between community concerns and the needs of those in treatment for (or in recovery from) the disease of addiction. Topics include revealing attitudes towards residential treatment facilities as part of a neighborhood's composition.

A quote taken from her post:: "What I like about "Addiction and Art" is that I am not overwhelmed by a sense of hopelessness, one that I assumed would dominate such a book. Instead, I found that the book evoked a full range of emotions, thoughts, and perspectives."
The book proposes using Addiction and Art shows, and her response to that is to advise her readers to take the show model and RUN with it!

Addiction Artworks Utilized in Georgia Schools
Addiction and Art Imagery was used during Drug Awareness Week in October in Woodstock, Georgia. Showcases in Middle Schools (Brents Middle School / Mill Creek Middle School) included artworks downloaded from the Addiction and Art site. Addiction Artist Donates Art To Others
Parker Lanier, an Addiction and Art Book Artist, is a recovering alcoholic who has an excellent website at:

He has generously donated his art to anyone who can use it to fight addiction of any kind. We are featuring an image of his "Support Artists in Recovery" painting in our Download of the Day section above. His website tells the story of his recovery and displays a lot of his artworks. He says that when he stopped drinking he started painting and hasn't been able to quit. We appreciate Parker for his determination to quit drinking and his generosity to others.
Upcoming: Addiction and Art Curriculum Guide
Using the Addiction and Art book for inspiration and structure, a team of individuals from Florida State University are hard at work developing a curriculum guidebook to facilitate interaction between art educators and guidance counselors when addressing addiction in schools. This impressive team consists of faculty, museum/gallery directors, film students, interns and Ph.D. students including Addiction and Art book artist, Amanda Alders. Updates on this very important project will appear on this site.

Night Out Against Crime in Georgia
Organizers of Friends Don't let Friends Die (www.friendsdontletfriendsdie.com) will be utilizing the Addiction and Art book in their community outreach on October 7, 2010 during a "Night Out Against Crime" event in Cherokee County, Georgia. This event will also feature a "pill drop" in response to the fact that in recent years overdoses involving prescription drugs have out paced overdoses from illicit drugs in Georgia.
A "pill drop" allows people to dispose of unused or expired prescriptions drugs that they may have in their home at the event on Oct. 7 for no charge.

The Lancet
The September 11, 2010 issue of the The Lancet medical journal (Volume 376, Issue 9744, Page 864) features a review of the "Addiction and Art" book. The article, "Art About Addiction" is written by Chloe AV Hunt. She concludes that although "science and art have been at odds" throughout history, the book, "Addiction and Art" is bringing them together "...to help address the impact of addiction".

This guidebook, which is available on their website, outlined how to organize a local art show on art and addiction. As a contributing artist and art therapy PhD student, the idea for a show interested me. This video tells the story of an art exhibition on the theme of drug addiction and recovery, the lives that were touched by the art and the artists who created the work."
